This carving was one of the few commissions I have agreed to do. A woman who bought four of my carvings at an art show in Florida actually had a herd of eighteen water buffalo on her property, kept only as pets. She requested a carving of one, and since I had already thought of doing a steer or buffalo carving I agreed. She drove me out to get a closer look on a golf cart, and while she could walk among them, they were by no means friendly to strangers. Having one of them come up close enough to sniff my arm was quite scary, feeling that it could easily flip the whole cart if it wanted to. Amazing animals. Anyway I decided I could fit a life sized head into a large black walnut log that I had. The horns measured four feet wide on the finished piece, which took around two months to complete. It was mounted on a base made of curly maple.
